Abstract

The paper aims to focus on Augustine’s “De Genesi ad litteram”, in order to study the wide use of philosophical terms, notions and arguments made by the Bishop of Hippo in his twelve books commentary on Genesis 1-3. The main themes examined are: the creation of the spiritual creature, the process of angelic knowledge, the formation of living beings, the double action of divine Providence, the nature of human soul, the different types of vision. Finally, the paper underlines Augustine’s positive attitude towards scientific research, thus highlighting his harmonious conception of the relationship between faith and reason.
